Pep Guardiola says the 28-year-old Manchester City player needs to get better.
Pep Guardiola talked about Jack Grealish’s current lack of playing time for Manchester City.
Grealish had not started a league game since December, when City beat Sheffield United 2-0. That was before this afternoon’s Premier League game against Everton.
Now, though, the City manager has talked about the player and why he hasn’t played in a few weeks.
Guardiola said this about Grealish and his present situation at a press conference he held not long ago, before today’s game against Everton.
“Jack is taking steps to get to his best level,” he said. He is now fighting with very good players, and that’s the only reason. He needs to get back to how good he was, especially last season and while he was at Villa.
MORE STORIES FROM MAN CITY “I’m excited to give him minutes. He’s getting better, but this season wasn’t as good as last year’s. We need something like that. I’m always happy with all of my players, including Jack.
It’s not a very big deal. In fact, the exact opposite. He is now taking steps to be at his best. We need everyone, including him. Jack is needed. I can’t wait for him to be at his best again and for me to give him minutes.”
This season, the 28-year-old started 41 games across all tournaments, but in the Premier League, he has only been used as a starter seven times.
This season, the Englishman has only played 13 league games and scored three goals and set up one other. Players like Jeremy Doku (two goals, five assists) and Bernardo Silva (six goals, four assists) have contributed more goals than him, which is why Guardiola thinks he may need to do more to keep his spot on the team.
But it sounds like the 53-year-old believes in the player and thinks he can improve and do what needs to be done, which we think is a good sign.
