Manchester City and West Ham have agreed on something about Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips made it clear months before the winter transfer window opened that he needed to move to get more regular game time if he wanted to keep his spot in the England team for the European Championship this summer. Some sides were interested in the former Leeds star, but City’s demands for money and terms made them turn them down.

Phillips chose to stay at Manchester City in the summer, but West Ham was interested in him and has been again this month. Still working out the last details of the deal, but both sides have agreed on enough for Phillips to know that he will be at the London Stadium for the second half of the season.

It’s not likely that the Blues will look for a replacement for Phillips. He has only played 123 minutes in the league this season and hasn’t played in the competition since coming on as a substitute in the 6-1 home win over Bournemouth at the start of November.

But they are still going to sign Claudio Echeverri, a 19-year-old Argentine defender from River Plate. The teenager will be able to stay with his club for at least six months because he is seen as a player for the future, not the present.

Premier League rules say Phillips can’t play against his old team when West Ham comes to Manchester City on the last day of the 2023–24 season. In the summer, City will be open to making a final move. They were also interested in Lucas Paqueta, a midfielder for West Ham, last year.

City bought Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol, both from Croatia, from Chelsea and RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window. The most recent player to join is Jeremy Doku. Then, on the last day, Matheus Nunes from Wolves joined the Blues. January isn’t expected to bring any big additions, but everyone has been watching to see if Kalvin Phillips leaves.
