According to Robbie Savage, Kalvin Phillips will travel to the Euros with England “regardless of where he ends up” this month.
The Manchester City midfielder has had a difficult time during his 18-month stay at the Etihad and is searching for a new club in January. The Premier League champions are willing to allow a loan exit, but Phillips needs to know he will play somewhere else.
Despite his lack of playing time, England caps have continued to come his way, and Newcastle are among the frontrunners to sign the former Leeds man. Phillips, on the other hand, wants assurances about the amount of game time he can expect before making a decision about his future.
Some have questioned Southgate’s decision to keep the 28-year-old despite his lack of playing time, but Savage believes he will be on the plane regardless of what happens in the coming months and has backed him to play at St James’ Park.
“Gareth Southgate has a lot of faith in Kalvin Phillips, as he continues to pick him in the England squad despite him playing hardly any minutes for Manchester City,” he told Planet Sport Bet. Regardless matter where he ends up after this transfer window, I believe he will go to the Euros.
“If I were him, I’d want to be playing Premier League football, so Newcastle appears to be an excellent option.” The fanbase is incredible, and they really need someone in centre midfield. He needs to go to where he believes he will play the most football in order to be in the greatest possible shape for the Euros, and the best choice right now appears to be moving to Newcastle.”
Phillips was a fixture in the previous Euros, establishing himself at the foundation of midfield alongside Declan Rice as England advanced to the final at Wembley. Since then, he’s fallen down the pecking order, with Pep Guardiola previously apologising for the paucity of minutes he’s played.
“I’m not sure what’s going to happen,” he remarked. I’m sorry for the decision I made for him. That’s something I’ve mentioned numerous times. He did not deserve what happened to him, and I am deeply sorry. The only thing I can say about him is that I am looking for people with wonderful personalities and characters, and he is an excellent example.”
