Manchester United make a major move for Alejandro Balde as a huge transfer battle with Barcelona erupts over the £26m–£34m-rated left-back
Manchester United have reportedly stepped up their interest in Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde as they continue searching for reinforcements on the left side of their defence. However, any potential transfer could hinge on a major disagreement between the two clubs over the structure of the deal.
According to ESPN’s Rob Dawson and Moises Llorens, United are keeping a close eye on Balde’s situation at Barcelona as the transfer deadline approaches.
United are said to favour a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent next summer. Such an arrangement would give the Red Devils the opportunity to assess Balde in the Premier League before committing to a permanent transfer.
Barcelona, however, appear to have different plans. The Catalan giants reportedly value the 22-year-old at between £26 million and £34 million and would prefer to receive a permanent transfer fee rather than allow him to leave temporarily.
That leaves both clubs with contrasting positions. United want a loan-to-buy arrangement, while Barcelona would reportedly prefer an immediate permanent sale.
Balde’s own preference could also play an important role, along with Barcelona’s willingness to sanction his departure. ESPN has confirmed that United are monitoring the situation, although the possibility of a deal should not be exaggerated at this stage.
The Spanish left-back is an attractive option because of his pace, athleticism and ability to contribute in attack. United are looking to add competition and depth at left-back, particularly with their pursuit of Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall becoming increasingly complicated.
Balde’s situation at Barcelona has also raised questions about his future. He was omitted from Barcelona’s squad for their opening La Liga fixture against Elche, with manager Hansi Flick explaining that the defender needed time to clear his mind and regain focus. That decision has inevitably fuelled further speculation surrounding his position at the club.
Despite the growing reports, Manchester United sources are said to be playing down the likelihood of a transfer being completed. Barcelona are aware of United’s interest and discussions have taken place, but there is currently no indication that an agreement is close.
With the deadline fast approaching, the situation could change rapidly. Barcelona must decide whether Balde remains part of Flick’s plans or whether selling him for a significant fee would be the better option, while United must determine whether they are willing to abandon their preferred loan structure.
The coming days could therefore be crucial in deciding whether Balde makes the move to Old Trafford, initially on loan with a potential permanent transfer, or remains at Barcelona.
