Thiago Alcântara Explains Why Kobbie Mainoo Is Best Suited as a Complete Number 8

Former midfielder Thiago Alcântara believes Kobbie Mainoo’s long-term future lies in the number 8 position, arguing that the Manchester United youngster is most effective when he is given responsibilities at both ends of the pitch. Rather than seeing him as a traditional attacking midfielder or a holding midfielder, Thiago feels Mainoo’s all-round qualities are perfectly suited to a central box-to-box role.

According to Thiago, Mainoo possesses a unique blend of defensive discipline and attacking ability. He can press with intensity, win possession, and break up opposition attacks, while also remaining calm on the ball, driving through midfield, and linking play with teammates in advanced areas. Those qualities, he believes, make Mainoo far more influential when he operates from central midfield instead of being stationed closer to goal.

Thiago also explained that playing as a number 10 would limit Mainoo’s overall influence. In that role, much of the responsibility revolves around pressing defenders, creating chances in congested areas, and staying high up the pitch. By contrast, the number 8 position allows Mainoo to collect possession from deeper areas, control transitions, and make well-timed forward runs into the penalty area where he can create or finish scoring opportunities.

He further stressed that Mainoo thrives when partnered with a more defensive-minded midfielder who provides balance and protection. With that security behind him, the young midfielder has greater freedom to carry the ball forward, take intelligent risks in possession, and play a bigger role in progressing attacks without sacrificing the team’s defensive shape.

Speaking during an appearance on Rio Ferdinand’s Rio Meets series, Thiago described Mainoo as the type of modern midfielder capable of influencing every phase of a match. He believes the England international has all the attributes to develop into an elite number 8, combining defensive awareness, technical quality, composure, and attacking impact in one complete midfield package.
