Pep Guardiola is believed to have suffered a transfer setback after one of his preferred midfield targets reportedly decided he would rather move to Manchester United than Manchester City this summer.
Manchester United are said to be prioritising the signing of two midfielders ahead of the next transfer window as the club looks to rebuild its squad. Reports suggest the recruitment department wants players whose qualities can complement rising star Kobbie Mainoo while also improving balance and energy in the centre of the pitch.
One player who fits that plan is Carlos Baleba. The Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder is admired for his aggressive defensive style, athleticism, and ability to win possession high up the field. A summer move has been described as realistic, with his valuation believed to be around £50 million.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently shared more details on United’s long-standing interest, explaining that Baleba was considered one of the club’s main midfield priorities last year.
Although the young midfielder has not enjoyed the smoothest season at Brighton & Hove Albion, where regular starts have been limited, his overall potential continues to attract major attention. United are still said to be monitoring him closely.
Reports also claim the Old Trafford side previously reached a verbal understanding with Baleba over personal terms last summer. While nothing official was signed, that informal agreement is believed to still be in place heading into the coming window.
If true, it would hand Manchester United a major advantage, as they would only need to negotiate a fee with Brighton rather than start discussions from scratch with the player’s camp.
That could prove important because United are not the only club interested. Manchester City have also been linked with the midfielder, while Arsenal are reportedly keeping tabs on the situation as well.
Another midfield battle may develop around Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest. Both Manchester rivals are believed to admire the youngster, but Forest are reportedly demanding a huge £125 million fee.
That valuation could push interested clubs toward cheaper alternatives, which may increase competition for Baleba. If that happens, United and City could once again find themselves competing for the same midfield talent in what promises to be a busy summer window.
