Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has reportedly released an official explanation regarding the controversial goal involving Danny Welbeck
Liverpool’s Premier League title bid suffered a major blow on Saturday as they fell to a 2-1 loss away at Brighton. Beyond the concern over Hugo Ekitiké’s injury and growing scrutiny of manager Arne Slot, one particular incident has angered the club’s supporters.
Just after the hour mark, Danny Welbeck converted his second goal of the afternoon following a headed knockdown from a Yankuba Minteh cross. Liverpool’s defenders immediately appealed for offside, and the ground went quiet as VAR reviewed the decision.
The Premier League and PGMOL have since shared the semi-automated offside imagery with Liverpool to clarify why the goal was upheld. The footage confirmed that although Welbeck’s arm and hand extended beyond the line, those body parts are excluded from offside calculations since they cannot be used to score. His shoulder and upper body were deemed level with the last defender at the key moment, meaning the goal was correctly allowed.
Welbeck, who has had an outstanding season with 12 league goals, acknowledged that the process of waiting for VAR decisions takes something away from the experience of scoring. He also referenced a previous incident against Fulham where he celebrated only to be flagged offside, saying the uncertainty now makes him hesitant to react when he finds the net.
Liverpool fans remain split on the matter. Some believe the tight margin of the decision feels unjust, while others accept that the technology showed Welbeck was legitimately onside and that the defensive marking was the real problem.
The defeat leaves Liverpool needing to regroup during the international break, with several key players unavailable and a Champions League quarter-final against PSG approaching rapidly.
