Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has attributed the club’s embarrassing Champions League elimination to a mistake by Mamadou Sarr, insisting his tactical approach was not to blame.
Already facing a 5-2 deficit from the first leg, Chelsea suffered yet another heavy loss at home, with PSG claiming an 8-2 aggregate victory in the round of 16. The tie was never particularly competitive.
Rosenior’s options at right-back were severely limited heading into the match, with Reece James sidelined through injury and Malo Gusto ruled out due to illness. This forced the manager to hand Sarr the position for his debut in the competition — and it didn’t go smoothly. The young player gave the ball away within six minutes, allowing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to put PSG ahead on a night the French side dominated from start to finish.
When asked whether he felt his players lacked intensity, Rosenior agreed, saying he absolutely wanted more from them. He acknowledged that Chelsea had started the game in a reasonable position, pressing in PSG’s half, before the early mistake changed the mood entirely. While backing Sarr as a talented youngster, Rosenior made clear that moments like these are part of the learning process at this level.
