Arsenal Legend Ian Wright Claims This One Underperforming Star is “Holding Back” United’s Top-Four Dream

The feel-good momentum surrounding Michael Carrick’s revival at Manchester United has encountered serious skepticism from Arsenal great Ian Wright. Despite United’s unbeaten start to 2026, a surge into fourth place, a statement derby triumph over Manchester City, and a thrilling 3-2 win against Arsenal at the Emirates, Wright has cast doubt over their Champions League ambitions.

Speaking on Stick to Football, Wright argued that one underperforming star is undermining the progress Carrick has made. His concern centers on Marcus Rashford, whose recent displays and body language, he claims, have lacked conviction. Wright suggested that while players like Kobbie Mainoo and new signing Bryan Mbeumo have flourished, United’s hopes of securing a top-four finish will remain fragile if their key attacker fails to deliver consistently.

Mbeumo’s 12 goal involvements in 22 matches have only intensified scrutiny on Rashford, with speculation that Carrick could lean toward a front three featuring Mbeumo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Benjamin Sesko. Although United currently lead the 2026 form table, the margin for error is slim. Carrick continues to back Rashford publicly, but growing pressure may soon force a decisive call in the race for Champions League qualification.
