Rodri and Jack Grealish will miss Manchester City’s trip to Aston Villa on Wednesday after picking up their fifth bookings of the season against Tottenham.
Rodri was awarded a yellow card in the 34th minute of the Premier League match for cynically pulling down Pedro Porro on a counter-attack. Grealish came on as a substitute on 52 minutes and was booked just after the hour mark for kicking the ball away after a free kick was awarded.
The pair will face a one-game penalty after receiving five bookings before City’s 19th game of the season. They will now be unavailable when Pep Guardiola’s side travels to Grealish’s boyhood club, Villa Park, in midweek.
Rodri is suspended for the second time this season, having already served a three-game ban for aggressive conduct after being sent off against Nottingham Forest. During a fight amongst numerous players, he was found to have grabbed Morgan Gibbs-White around the throat.
During Rodri’s first suspension, City lost all three domestic matches. Wolves and Arsenal defeated the Blues in the league, and Newcastle United eliminated them from the Carabao Cup. In the absence of his ever-present midfielder, Guardiola employed a variety of tactical shifts, with Kalvin Phillips, Rico Lewis, Mateo Kovacic, and Bernardo Silva all playing in the deeper role at various stages.
Rodri’s absence comes ahead of one of the Premier League’s hardest games this season. Villa have won 10 of their 11 home games in all competitions, including all seven in a row. Unai Emery’s team did, however, leave it late to draw at Bournemouth on Sunday, with Ollie Watkins’ 90th-minute header tying the game at the Vitality Stadium.
