Casemiro has opened up about the controversial moment that saw him sent off against Chelsea, admitting he regrets the reckless foul that led to his dismissal. However, he made it clear that what manager Rúben Amorim told him after the game left him furious and is something he will never accept from any coach.
The Premier League has since explained the reasoning behind the Brazilian’s red card. Casemiro, who had already been booked earlier in the match, had put United 2-1 ahead before clashing with Chelsea’s Andrey Santos near the halfway line. His challenge drew a second yellow card, leaving the referee with no choice but to send him off just before the break.
In a post on their official Match Centre account, the Premier League clarified that the dismissal was for a holding offence that cut short a promising attack. They also confirmed that VAR was not involved in the decision, as the protocol does not apply to second yellow cards. Because of this, United cannot appeal the decision, and Casemiro is forced to accept his fourth red card since joining the club.
Fortunately for United, the damage is limited. Since it was a second booking rather than a straight red, Casemiro will only serve a one-match ban. This rules him out of United’s trip to Brentford next weekend but makes him available again for the clash against Sunderland on October 4.
The match itself had already been full of drama. Chelsea were also reduced to ten men when goalkeeper Robert Sánchez was sent off after fouling Bryan Mbeumo outside the penalty area. The Spaniard was shown a straight red for denying a clear goalscoring chance but, like Casemiro, will only miss one game.
