John Aldridge doesn’t think that Manchester City or Chelsea will lose a lot of points like Everton did.
After being found to have broken the Premier League’s rules about money, the Toffees lost 10 points right away on Friday. The heads of the club said they will fight the punishment, which put them in the relegation zone.
City fans are worried about Everton’s loss of points. The European winners are the only other club the Premier League has charged with breaking their rules about money. Between 2009 and 2018, they are said to have broken more than 100 rules.
City still doesn’t know what punishment, if any, the Premier League wants to give them. Reports of payments made to Chelsea’s former owner Roman Abramovich could also bring them into question, even though the Premier League hasn’t charged them yet.
But Liverpool great Aldridge, who called Everton’s points deduction “excessive,” doesn’t think City or Chelsea will get punished in the same way Everton did. He thinks that the clubs have enough money to keep the Premier League in check.
Aldridge told the Liverpool ECHO, “Everton were a sitting duck.” “I don’t know how you measure it, but I think it all depends on what happens next.” We’ve all seen what happened at Chelsea under Roman Abramovich or at Man City – 115 charges.
“Was it because the other teams did well?” Who else is in the top six? It could be because Everton doesn’t have enough money to fight it.
“There are no limits on how much City and Chelsea can spend, so people who want to do them have been scared off for years, putting it off… Everton couldn’t do that, but I’m sure they could have if they had had the same tools.
It seems like the Premier League chose the easy way out by going after Everton, but Aldridge hopes it will be fair. “The league is under pressure to do something, and I’m waiting to see if they do it now, with that club (City) in particular,” he said.
“I hope that fairness prevails at the end of the day – if it is good enough for Everton then it is certainly good enough for City and any other club.”
Some City fans are scared that their team will be kicked out of the Premier League. Everton lost 10 points for a single breach, but City is said to have made 115 breaches. It’s hard to say what will happen because neither case has ever happened before. The Premier League charged City in February, one month before Everton.
As for Chelsea, they were already being looked into by the Premier League for claimed financial violations. These were reported to the authorities by Todd Boehly’s group after they bought the club from Abramovich in May 2022.
A joint investigation by The Guardian and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism now says Chelsea made a number of other hidden payments that may have been against the law. This month, these claims were just made public.
