Premier League Giant has been Stripped of thier premier League Titles after found guilty of 115 charges by FA
The Premier League’s confirmation that Everton will be punished 10 points has raised more questions than answers about the punishment(s) that could befall Manchester City.
The Toffees were docked ten points on Friday after being found guilty of breaking the Premier League’s financial rules. Premier League rules allow clubs to lose £105 million over three years, and an independent committee determined Everton’s losses for 2021-22 totaled £124.5 million.
Sean Dyche’s team has dropped from 14th to 19th in the rankings, with only goal difference saving them from the bottom. Everton have indicated that they would appeal the judgement, and a decision is likely before the end of the season.
With the 10-point deduction being the most in Premier League history, all eyes are now on what will happen with City and their Financial Fair Play [FFP] inquiry. City was charged in February with violating hundreds of financial laws stretching back to the 2009/10 season.
“In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club (Club) to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4,” said the Premier League statement.
“Commissions are independent of the Premier League and member clubs,” the statement read, listing the breaches with five separate points made on the rulings. The independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel will appoint the members of the Commission in accordance with Premier League Rules W.19, W.20, and W.26.
“The proceedings before the Commission will be confidential and heard in private, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.” The Commission’s final award will be published on the Premier League website in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.2. This certification complies with Premier League Rule W.82.1. “Until further notice, the Premier League will make no further comment on this matter.”
Though City could face harsh penalties for the allegations, it has been stated that they are unlikely to lose their Premier League titles. Since the 2009/10 season, the Blues have won the Premier League seven times, including each of the previous three.
However, the chance of them being taken away remains remote, with the Independent’s Miguel Delaney acknowledging that figures involved in the case do not expect the punishment to be ‘backwards’.
He has noted in the past: “Figures involved don’t seem to think any prospective punishments would be retrospective or ‘looking backwards’ (ie stripping titles) but this is all described as ‘unprecedented’.”
Though this would be a comfort for City, the danger of a 30-point deduction or immediate relegation to the Championship is’very real’. According to Martyn Ziegler, a journalist with The New York Times.
In a report published last week, he stated that ‘the threat of a 30-point deduction or automatic relegation from the Premier League would appear to be very real’ for both City and Chelsea, who are both being investigated by the Premier League and the Football Association for potential violations of football rules, including FFP.
