David De Gea has turned down a surprise return to another Premier League club and has instead made a stunning comeback to his former side.
David De Gea reportedly turned down an opportunity to return to Premier League action during the January transfer window, despite being approached by Nottingham Forest. The 33-year-old goalkeeper, who has been without a club since leaving Manchester United last summer after a distinguished 12-year career, was offered a short-term deal to see out the season at the City Ground. Forest hoped to bring in the experienced Spaniard to address concerns in their goalkeeping department, but De Gea declined the offer, preferring to wait for a more suitable project that aligns with his long-term goals.
While De Gea has been the subject of transfer speculation linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia, he remains unattached and open to offers as a free agent. Nottingham Forest, in addition to pursuing De Gea, also showed interest in Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, who has lost his place in the starting lineup to David Raya. Ultimately, Forest opted to sign Matz Sels from Strasbourg in a deal valued at £5.1 million. The Belgian goalkeeper signed a contract running for three and a half years, adding to the club’s already crowded goalkeeping roster, which includes Matt Turner, Wayne Hennessey, and Odysseas Vlachodimos.
Despite being without a team, De Gea remains eligible to sign outside of the transfer window, given his free agent status. With 545 appearances for Manchester United and 45 international caps for Spain, his experience and proven abilities still make him a highly attractive option for clubs in need of a seasoned goalkeeper. Speculation has swirled around a potential return to Old Trafford in a mentoring or backup role, especially as Manchester United undergo restructuring under INEOS leadership. However, De Gea is believed to be biding his time, waiting for the right club and opportunity to reignite his career on terms that reflect his pedigree and aspirations.
