Manchester United ‘interested’ in shock move for Chelsea former striker who is very fast on the ball.
Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a surprise January move for Timo Werner, the former Chelsea forward whose time in the Premier League was largely underwhelming. According to Sky Germany, United have already reached out to RB Leipzig about the striker, as they continue their search for attacking reinforcements.
Werner, currently with Leipzig after rejoining them in 2022, has been left frustrated by his lack of playing time this season. Despite scoring 16 goals last campaign, he has managed only two in eight Bundesliga matches so far, spending just over 200 minutes on the pitch. Although no formal bid has been submitted, Werner is said to be among the names being considered by United boss Erik ten Hag.
The German forward, previously linked to clubs like Real Madrid, Fulham, Crystal Palace, and West Ham, endured a difficult stint at Chelsea, managing just 10 goals in 56 Premier League appearances following his £47.5 million move from Leipzig. He was part of the squad that won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel in 2021 but returned to Germany the following year for a reduced fee of £25.3 million.
Reports from BILD have suggested that Werner struggled with the intense scrutiny and media pressure during his time in England. Recently left out of the German national team, with his last appearance dating back to June 2022, Werner may view a return to the Premier League as an opportunity to reignite his career and push for a Euro 2024 call-up.
Though nothing is concrete yet, United’s interest reflects their need for fresh attacking options, and Werner—available at a reduced value—could offer a low-risk, short-term solution.
