Ruben Amorim and Bruno Fernandes showcased clear frustration with Joshua Zirkzee during Manchester United’s Europa League match against Viktoria Plzen, as the Dutch striker relinquished possession 11 times in the opening 33 minutes.

The first half at the Doosan Arena was largely uninspired, with Plzen adopting a deep defensive stance and United struggling to establish control. Among the team’s challenges, Zirkzee’s difficulties were particularly glaring. Acquired for £36.5 million from Bologna over the summer, the forward has yet to capitalize on the promise he showed with a debut goal against Fulham.

Carl Anka of The Athletic reported that Fernandes grew visibly agitated with Zirkzee’s repeated mistakes on the ball, describing United’s performance as “sluggish” and pointing out their failure to push Plzen’s defense onto the back foot. Similarly, David McDonnell of The Mirror noted Amorim’s evident displeasure at Zirkzee’s inability to maintain possession, even in situations with little pressure.

This isn’t the first time the young forward has drawn criticism from Amorim. Following a lackluster substitute appearance in the coach’s debut match against Ipswich, Amorim highlighted concerns about Zirkzee’s decision-making. The Portuguese manager emphasized the importance of players understanding when to hold onto the ball and when to drive forward, urging Zirkzee to refine his positioning in attacking plays.

Although Zirkzee has shown glimpses of potential, his early performances at Old Trafford have been inconsistent, raising questions about his tactical awareness and reliability. With United striving to enhance their offensive fluidity, the onus is now on Zirkzee to adapt quickly and justify his significant transfer fee.
