According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have agreed personal terms with Sporting CP’s star striker ahead of a potential move to Old Trafford next summer

Manchester United is reportedly intensifying efforts to secure Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres as they aim to revamp their squad following a disappointing season. The club, which recently appointed Ruben Amorim as head coach, appears set on leveraging the Portuguese manager’s past relationship with the Swedish forward to bring him to Old Trafford. Amorim, who previously worked with Gyokeres at Sporting CP, is believed to see the striker as a key addition to his attacking lineup.

Scouts from Manchester United were recently spotted at Sporting’s clash with Arsenal, closely monitoring Gyokeres’ performance. Despite a subdued display in that particular match, the striker remains highly sought after due to his consistent goal-scoring record and versatility. However, Manchester United is not alone in this pursuit. Rivals Manchester City have also expressed interest, sending representatives to assess the 26-year-old forward during the same week.

Gyokeres has been nothing short of sensational since joining Sporting CP, netting 67 goals in 69 appearances. Last season alone, he amassed an astonishing 43 goals and 15 assists in 50 games, while this season, he has already racked up 24 goals and four assists in 20 matches. His physicality, sharp finishing, and ability to link up play make him an attractive option for any top club, particularly Manchester United, whose attacking options have faltered this season.

Rasmus Højlund, one of United’s current forwards, shows immense promise but may need more time to fully develop into a consistent goal-scorer at the highest level. Gyokeres’ arrival would not only provide immediate attacking firepower but also offer mentorship to the young Dane. With another striker, Joshua Zirkzee, struggling to make an impact and likely to leave next summer, Gyokeres could seamlessly fill the void and strengthen United’s frontline.

Financially, Gyokeres’ transfer could be within reach for Manchester United. Although his release clause stands at £84 million, reports suggest a gentleman’s agreement with Sporting may allow him to leave for around £63 million next summer. This reduced fee could make him a more attractive target for United, who are keen to bolster their squad while maintaining financial prudence.

Amorim’s influence could prove decisive in this transfer saga. The manager’s strong relationship with Gyokeres from their time at Sporting may give Manchester United an edge over Manchester City and other suitors. As the summer window approaches, the Red Devils appear determined to fend off competition and secure the prolific forward to transform their attacking fortunes and reignite their ambitions for domestic and European glory.
