Spurs issue a statement after Destiny Udogie was racially attacked on social media following Liverpool’s victory.
Tottenham Hotspur have denounced the racist insults directed at Destiny Udogie following their 2-1 victory against Liverpool on Saturday.
Spurs overcame the nine-man Reds in the dying minutes thanks to Joel Matip’s own goal. Cody Gakpo had cancelled out Son Heung-min’s first-half opener, although the game had been marred by controversy owing to Luis Diaz’s incorrectly disallowed goal for offside when the score was 0-0.
Udogie posted a series of photos from the game on Instagram to celebrate Tottenham’s victory. However, the comments were soon deluged with racist slurs.
Tottenham announced in a statement on Monday, “We are disgusted by the racist messages directed towards Destiny Udogie on social media following Saturday’s game against Liverpool.”
“We will collaborate with the Premier League and, if possible, take action against any individual we can identify.”
“We stand with you, Destiny.”
Udogie has started all seven Premier League games for Tottenham this season, registering two assists and keeping two clean sheets.
The 20-year-old joined the Spurs first-team for the first time this summer after signing from Udinese in August 2022. He spent the remainder of last season on loan at the club.
Udogie has been lauded for his management of Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in Tottenham’s last two games.
Udogie recovered admirably after getting a caution early in Spurs’ 2-2 north London derby match to keep Saka quiet from open play. This was followed by an equally excellent performance against Salah, despite the fact that Liverpool played with at least one fewer man for the most of the game.
