Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Werder Bremen defender Karim Coulibaly as they prepare for the upcoming summer transfer window, with fresh updates coming from Sky Sport Germany.
The club recently secured the future of Harry Maguire, agreeing on a contract extension that keeps him at Old Trafford until next summer, with an additional year included as an option. Even with that deal in place, United’s recruitment plans in defence remain active.
There is a growing interest within the club to bring in a left-footed centre-back who can challenge Lisandro Martinez for a regular starting spot. While Ayden Heaven showed promise earlier in the season, his involvement has reduced under interim manager Michael Carrick, who is still in contention to take the role permanently.
Reports from Germany suggest several elite clubs are now tracking Coulibaly, with United firmly among those keeping close tabs on his situation. However, Chelsea are believed to be further along in negotiations, having already opened discussions with the player’s representatives ahead of a potential move.
The 18-year-old defender, known for operating on the left side of central defence, is widely expected to leave Bremen this summer. The German club have reportedly placed a valuation between £35 million and £44 million on the young talent.
Coulibaly only made his senior debut last August but has quickly become a regular, featuring 22 times in the Bundesliga and starting the majority of those matches. His performances have been solid, boasting an 86 percent pass accuracy, alongside averaging 4.3 clearances and 2.5 ball recoveries per game, while also holding his own in duels.
His physical strength and aerial ability suggest he could adapt well to the demands of the Premier League, and there is room for further development, particularly in his ball distribution as he gains more experience.
Although United already have Heaven as a backup option for Martinez, the youngster has found himself on the bench more often in recent weeks, even during periods when the Argentine defender has been unavailable.
Heaven will be eager to secure more playing time next season, but United may still decide to strengthen that position with another left-sided defender, especially given Martinez’s recurring injury concerns.
While Bremen’s asking price appears high for a player with just one full season of top-level football, United could look to negotiate a lower fee, potentially around £25 million, if they decide to make a serious move for Coulibaly.
