INEOS made the call to part ways with Ruben Amorim on Monday morning—a decision that managed to feel both surprising and inevitable at the same time. The Portuguese coach had already shown signs of frustration during his short spell after arriving from Sporting CP, but his fiery reaction following the 1-1 draw against Leeds United proved to be the tipping point.
That outburst stood out because, for the first time, Amorim openly criticized those higher up in the club’s hierarchy. The response from the board was swift and decisive, reflecting a reality that applies far beyond football. As Gary Neville pointed out, openly clashing with your employers rarely ends well, regardless of the industry.
With Amorim now gone, Darren Fletcher has stepped in to temporarily lead the team for their Premier League clash against Burnley. He will be supported by Travis Binnion and Jonny Evans, but his role is strictly short-term. The club is already working behind the scenes to appoint an interim manager who can steady the ship until the end of the season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believed to be among the leading options.
Looking further ahead, United are expected to conduct a more thorough search for a permanent manager during the summer. The list of candidates is likely to expand once contracts expire and the international calendar clears, giving the club a wider pool to choose from. Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has already emerged as an early favorite, though several other names—both from England and abroad—are also being considered.
One particularly eye-catching name has now entered the conversation: Luis Enrique. The Paris Saint-Germain coach, who previously managed Barcelona and Roma, is being linked with a potential move after claims surfaced that he could leave France in search of a new challenge in the Premier League.
However, the credibility of those claims remains highly questionable. Reports suggesting Enrique is ready to walk away from PSG have been strongly denied, with sporting director Luis Campos dismissing the rumors outright as completely false. Given that Enrique is under contract until 2027 and currently in charge of one of Europe’s strongest squads, the idea of him abandoning that project for Manchester United appears unlikely.
