PGMOL finally disallowed Bournemouth late goal as Recent review shows there was a foul on Amad diallo before the equalizer
Manchester United F.C. were left frustrated after a key VAR decision went against them just moments before AFC Bournemouth struck back to level the match.
Amad Diallo went down under a challenge from Adrien Truffert inside the box and immediately appealed for a penalty, but the referee waved play on. Despite strong protests from United players, VAR reviewed the incident and backed the on-field decision, ruling that the contact was not enough to justify a spot-kick. Almost immediately after the check, Bournemouth broke forward, with Truffert involved in the move as he set up Ryan Christie, who calmly finished past Senne Lammens to bring the game level shortly after Bruno Fernandes had earlier scored from the penalty spot.
The decision sparked anger among United players, who felt the foul on Amad should have been punished, especially given how quickly Bournemouth capitalised on the counterattack. However, the Premier League Match Centre later clarified the ruling on X, stating that the challenge by Truffert had been checked and confirmed by VAR, with officials concluding there was insufficient contact to award a penalty.
The game continued to swing dramatically as United regained the lead when a Bruno Fernandes corner resulted in an own goal from James Hill, putting the visitors back in front. But controversy was far from over.
Harry Maguire then found himself at the centre of another major talking point after he was penalised for pulling back Evanilson inside the box, denying what officials judged to be a clear goalscoring opportunity. The referee showed a straight red card, and VAR upheld the decision, confirming it as a holding offence without any attempt to play the ball.
The Premier League Match Centre later explained the incident on X, noting that the penalty and red card for denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO) were correctly awarded and confirmed after review.
Eli Junior Kroupi converted the resulting penalty to bring Bournemouth level once again, adding further frustration for Michael Carrick, who was forced into defensive reshuffles as Ayden Heaven came on to replace the dismissed Maguire alongside Leny Yoro.
With Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt already unavailable, United’s defensive options were stretched even further, meaning Maguire will now miss the upcoming clash against Leeds United due to suspension, although he is expected to return shortly afterwards for key fixtures against Chelsea F.C., Brentford F.C., and Liverpool F.C.
Despite playing with ten men for the final stages, United still managed to hold on for a draw, with Carrick’s side under heavy pressure as Bournemouth pushed for a winner, including a long-range effort from Alex Scott that struck the crossbar. A late boost came with Mason Mount returning to action after his recent injury absence, coming on in place of Amad as United saw out a tense finish.
