Chelsea are closing in on their first January signing after reaching an agreement with a £100m-rated South American Star Player

With the January transfer window rapidly approaching its close, clubs across Europe have ramped up their recruitment activity. Chelsea are no exception, as they still have several key areas to address if they’re serious about competing for major silverware and securing Champions League football this season.

To genuinely mount a Premier League title challenge, the Blues need reinforcements in at least three critical positions: central defense, goalkeeper, and a proven striker. Encouragingly, there’s been progress on all three fronts.

At center-back, Chelsea are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. If that deal collapses, they’ve identified Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi and Como’s Jacobo Ramon as viable alternatives.

In goal, Chelsea have recalled Teddy Sharman-Lowe from his loan spell at Bolton Wanderers and are keeping tabs on Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin. Current backup Filip Jorgensen, meanwhile, is believed to be exploring his options elsewhere. Now there’s been a significant update on the striker front as well.

According to Indykaila News, a source with over 700,000 followers on X, Julian Alvarez could be available this summer, with Atletico Madrid prepared to let him leave. The Argentine is reportedly eager to return to England, and Chelsea are already making concrete moves to secure his signature, with a transfer fee around £75 million being discussed.

Alvarez has excelled individually since joining Atletico from Manchester City in 2024. The 25-year-old has been highly productive, contributing 40 goals and 13 assists in 84 appearances at the Wanda Metropolitano.

However, after winning the Champions League, FA Cup, and two Premier League titles with City, he surely expected to continue adding trophies to his cabinet. Unfortunately, silverware has proven elusive under Diego Simeone, and Atletico currently look distant from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona in terms of competitiveness.

Previous reports suggested Atletico were unwilling to sell and might demand as much as €150 million for their star forward. This latest update, however, indicates that Alvarez wants a Premier League return and the club are willing to facilitate his departure.

Last summer, Chelsea splashed nearly £100 million on Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, yet neither has established themselves as a consistent goal threat. The Brazilian has shown more promise with 11 goals in 31 outings, while the former Ipswich striker has managed just three.

If these reports are accurate, it seems Chelsea have learned from their recent mistakes and are now targeting a proven finisher with a track record at the highest level. Whether they can successfully land Alvarez this summer remains to be seen.
