Well, naturally that’s the objective. Except it was also supposedly the objective during the last transfer window. And the window before that. And the one before that as well. Yet despite all these grand intentions, no permanent move has ever come even remotely close to happening. The suggestion that this has only now become their official “plan” is genuinely comical. Clearing the former Manchester City star’s staggering Ā£300,000 weekly salary from their wage bill has been Chelsea’s number one priority for years now.
We can’t identify any convincing reason why this might suddenly materialize now as opposed to the summer or any of the previous windows where similar plans fell through. The only conceivable pathway to a permanent transfer involves Sterling accepting a substantial pay cut, or a club somewhere being willing to match his enormous salary demands. We’d be genuinely astonished if either scenario plays out, and there’s certainly nothing to suggest it’s likely to happen in the remaining 10 days of this window.
