Pep Guardiola and Manchester City remain hugely impressed with Max Alleyne, despite their determination to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

City have struck a deal to bring Guehi to the Etihad for £20 million next week, with the England international poised to sign a five-and-a-half-year contract as he approaches the final six months of his Palace deal.

Crystal Palace will secure a sell-on clause as part of the agreement, with City fending off serious competition from Liverpool and Arsenal to complete their second major January signing following the arrival of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth last week.

Initially, Guehi was understood to be leaning toward honoring the remainder of his Crystal Palace contract through the summer, which would have entitled the Ivory Coast-born defender to a lucrative signing-on bonus as a free agent at his next destination.

Moreover, the former Chelsea academy graduate was believed to prefer joining either Liverpool or Arsenal ahead of Manchester City, having come agonizingly close to a £25 million transfer to Anfield last summer.

However, City ramped up their pursuit of the 25-year-old after injuries struck both Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol during a 1-1 draw with Chelsea earlier this month, forcing club officials to fast-track negotiations with Palace and win Guehi over to Guardiola’s project.

Guehi was eventually convinced and will pocket around £300,000 per week at the Etihad Stadium, positioning him among the club’s top 10 earners as he fills a critical defensive void during City’s multi-front trophy challenge.

Etihad executives are reportedly delighted with the shrewd piece of business, convinced they’ve landed a player worth £80 million in today’s market for a fraction of that price.

City face important decisions about their defensive future, with John Stones and Nathan Ake widely tipped to leave at season’s end. Yet questions have surfaced about academy starlet Max Alleyne’s long-term prospects following City’s agreement with Palace for Guehi.

Alleyne was recalled from his Watford loan after Dias and Gvardiol’s injuries and has since started and shone in three matches over the last fortnight—against Brighton, Exeter City, and Newcastle.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano recently clarified that Guardiola is “very happy” with Alleyne, who is considered an outstanding talent at the club, with everyone at the Etihad equally delighted with his progress.

Alleyne is set to become a permanent first-team fixture next season as Manchester City continues its evolution under sporting director Hugo Viana, who masterminded a comprehensive squad rebuild last summer and has now delivered both Semenyo and Guehi for an impressive combined fee of £84 million this January.
