Players and coaching staff at Manchester City reacted with anger following a rejected penalty claim when Phil Foden was brought down in the penalty area by Fabian Schar during their match against Newcastle.

The incident occurred in the 17th minute after Jeremy Doku set up Foden inside the box, where the Manchester City player sent his attempt off target.

During Foden’s shooting motion, Schar executed a desperate tackle on the England player.

The Newcastle defender connected with Foden’s left foot in a challenge that occurred following the ball’s departure.

The midfielder was observed clutching his left foot after tumbling to the left, while his Manchester City colleagues protested for a spot-kick.

Video Assistant Referee officials examined Schar’s tackle, but ultimately upheld the original call on the pitch.

Ex-Manchester City centre-back Micah Richards suggested on Sky Sports that Schar may have escaped punishment because Foden had completed his shot beforehand.

‘That’s clearly a penalty on Foden, let’s be honest,’ one supporter posted online.

‘”The shot was already taken” That doesn’t matter. If this challenge happens in midfield after a player completes a pass, it’s called as a foul and likely results in a yellow card.’

‘Another questionable VAR call,’ someone else commented. ‘Foden was taken out with no penalty given. Whether the ball was touched away before contact or not is irrelevant—it’s still a foul.’

‘Can’t understand why Foden wasn’t awarded a penalty,’ a third person posted. ‘That same tackle anywhere else on the pitch would definitely be called a free kick in our favour.’

Newcastle ultimately secured a stunning 2-1 win against Manchester City, a setback that hinders Pep Guardiola’s team’s challenge for Premier League frontrunners Arsenal.

The Magpies took the lead through Harvey Barnes in the 63rd minute, before Ruben Dias levelled the score five minutes later for Manchester City.

Newcastle restored their advantage in the 70th minute when Barnes netted from short range.

Following an extended VAR check lasting nearly five minutes, Barnes’ decisive goal was upheld despite Manchester City’s protests regarding a potential offside during the goal’s buildup.
