Manchester United Eye Cut-Price Deal for Christopher Nkunku Amid Chelsea Clear-Out
Manchester United have only managed to secure one major signing in the current transfer window, while rivals Chelsea have already completed four attacking additions. Despite their differing levels of activity, both clubs could soon find common ground with the potential transfer of Christopher Nkunku.
United had previously shown interest in the French forward during the January window, but Chelsea’s hefty £70 million valuation was a major stumbling block. Nkunku struggled for game time last season under new boss Enzo Maresca, starting just nine league matches. With Chelsea having already added Estevao and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens to bolster their forward line, Nkunku is no longer seen as essential and is reportedly available for a cut-price fee.
A former Bundesliga Golden Boot winner at RB Leipzig, Nkunku has the ability to operate across various positions in attack — as a left winger, attacking midfielder, or even a central striker. This kind of versatility could be exactly what Manchester United need, especially with their ongoing struggles to consistently create and finish chances.
United ranked poorly last season in terms of expected goals created, and players like Rashford, Antony, and Sancho failed to deliver the required consistency. A fully fit Nkunku could bring back the spark and unpredictability that the club’s attack desperately lacks.
Currently, the French international is in the United States representing Chelsea at the Club World Cup, where he has already made four appearances. The Blues are set to face Brazilian side Fluminense in the semi-final.
While Nkunku’s talent is clear, concerns remain about his fitness. Last season was marred by knee and hamstring issues, and doubts linger over whether he can stay healthy long enough to make an impact at Old Trafford. Additionally, if Chelsea are willing to offload him for such a low fee, some might see it as a red flag regarding his long-term reliability.
Nonetheless, at £35 million, Nkunku could be a bargain for a player of his quality and experience. If United are able to offload a current attacker — like Sancho or Greenwood — the Frenchman could slot in nicely, adding depth, creativity, and goals.
