Despite United’s serious interest in the prolific forward from Sporting CP, it seems Arsenal have made the decisive move to secure his services.
Gyökeres, who joined Sporting from Coventry City in 2023 under Ruben Amorim, enjoyed an extraordinary run in Portugal, netting 97 goals in 102 games. Given Manchester United’s lack of a reliable goal scorer and Amorim’s existing relationship with the striker, a move to Old Trafford had seemed like a natural progression. However, Arsenal’s long-standing pursuit of the player now appears to be paying off.
Reports from France’s L’Équipe suggest that Arsenal have reached a verbal agreement with Gyökeres and his representatives on a five-year contract. Journalist Sacha Tavolieri further claims that all personal terms are settled and Arsenal are now focused on negotiating a fee with Sporting CP. While the Portuguese club have ruled out the full £85 million release clause, they are also unwilling to go as low as £60 million, meaning Arsenal will need to strike a compromise to get the deal done.
This development is a blow to United, especially considering the possibility that Gyökeres could make his Premier League debut against them at Old Trafford if the transfer is completed soon. The irony of watching their former top target line up for a direct rival in the season opener would not go unnoticed by fans or club executives.
For United, the failed pursuit means shifting attention elsewhere. Talks continue with Joshua Zirkzee, and there are reports of a £50 million offer being prepared for Ademola Lookman. With speculation swirling around Rasmus Højlund possibly being included in a swap deal for Victor Osimhen, the need to sign a proven centre-forward becomes even more urgent.
Gyökeres choosing Arsenal over a reunion with Amorim might also raise concerns about United’s pulling power in the current market, particularly when competing against clubs offering Champions League football.
