Manchester United are moving steadily toward finalising a deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo after putting forward an improved offer. While both clubs are nearing consensus, a few contractual elements still need to be resolved.
United have made Mbeumo a key target, viewing him as an ideal fit for one of the two attacking midfield roles beside recent signing Matheus Cunha. Mbeumo had an impressive season in front of goal, scoring 20 times in the Premier League alone. Only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Erling Haaland netted more in the league last term. It marked the first time the Cameroonian international hit double digits in a top-flight campaign.
Earlier in his career, Mbeumo found the back of the net 11 times for Troyes in France’s Ligue 2 during the 2018/19 season. The following year, he recorded 16 goals for Brentford while they were still competing in the Championship. Since Brentford’s promotion, he has delivered consistent goal tallies with eight, nine, and another nine goals across all competitions over his first three Premier League seasons.
Manchester United initially submitted a £55 million offer, but Brentford rejected it, reportedly holding out for a figure comparable to what was paid for Cunha. A more recent proposal from United exceeds £60 million, according to reports, and includes a package of £55 million up front and an additional £5 million in performance-based add-ons.
Brentford are said to be seeking more favourable conditions on the bonus structure before giving the green light. Despite United leading the race, the Bees remain open to other suitors in hopes of igniting a bidding war for the forward.
If the transfer goes through, it will become the highest sale in Brentford’s history, surpassing the £40 million deal that saw Ivan Toney join Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.
