Manchester United are reportedly gearing up to make a strong move for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia this summer, as the club looks to overhaul its goalkeeping department. Garcia, 24, enjoyed a breakout campaign in La Liga, earning eight clean sheets in 38 appearances. His agility, composure, and shot-stopping abilities have caught the attention of several top clubs across Europe.
Arsenal have also been monitoring Garcia, but their inability to promise a regular starting spot could hamper their chances of landing him. In contrast, Manchester United are believed to be actively considering a change in goal, especially following Andre Onana’s underwhelming performances last season. Onana, who joined United in 2023 for around €50 million, has come under fire for costly mistakes, particularly in high-pressure matches like the Europa League final. His inconsistent form and recent exclusion from some matchday squads have raised questions about his future at Old Trafford, with reports linking him to a possible move to the Saudi Pro League.
According to sources, United view Garcia as a serious option to become their new first-choice goalkeeper. The club is said to be working behind the scenes to begin formal talks soon, hoping to secure the Espanyol man before rival suitors can firm up their own offers. Although Garcia is tied to a long-term deal with Espanyol until 2028, he could be available for just €25 million thanks to a release clause in his contract—half the price United paid for Onana.
While Barcelona are also in the race and are currently seen as favourites, Garcia has yet to commit to any club, leaving United with an opening. United’s management, now operating under Rúben Amorim and INEOS, appear eager to act quickly and decisively. Amorim reportedly sees Garcia as an ideal fit for his tactical system, which emphasizes controlled buildup from the back. Unlike Onana, who sometimes takes excessive risks, Garcia is seen as a more stable presence who still brings modern attributes like strong distribution and composure in high-pressure situations.
Garcia’s age and experience in a top league make him a valuable long-term investment, and his €25 million price tag is considered a bargain in today’s inflated market. With the club looking to rebuild around younger, more tactically flexible players, the move for Garcia aligns with a broader strategy shift. If things move as expected, United may soon launch formal negotiations and offer Garcia a clear path to the No. 1 role—something neither Arsenal nor Barcelona can currently promise.
