Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. The Brazilian forward is set to join the Red Devils after the club agreed to trigger his £62.5 million release clause, which will be paid in instalments. Cunha has given the green light to a five-year contract with the possibility of extending it by an additional year. His move is expected to be the first signing under new boss Ruben Amorim this summer, with the final paperwork and contract formalities due to be completed in the coming days.
Despite penning a new four-year deal with Wolves in February, Cunha had been tipped for a move away from Molineux as early as January. Under manager Vitor Pereira, he delivered an impressive season, netting 15 goals and registering six assists across 36 Premier League appearances. His performances have not gone unnoticed, and United believe he can significantly boost their attacking options.
Manchester United are not stopping there, with plans to further bolster their frontline once Cunha’s signing is officially wrapped up. The club is actively pursuing a new central striker, and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap has emerged as their top priority. However, efforts to bring in Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon appear to have hit a roadblock, especially after Sporting’s recent Europa League final loss, which has complicated any potential reunion with Amorim.
United’s failure to secure a Champions League spot next season, following their Europa League disappointment, has added pressure on the club to reinforce their squad. This will be the first time since the 2014/15 campaign that they won’t feature in European competition. To make matters worse, United concluded a dismal league season in 15th place, winning just once in their last nine matches. However, their 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday allowed them to finish above Wolves in the standings, bringing a small measure of satisfaction in an otherwise disappointing year.
