Matheus Cunha, the standout player for Wolverhampton Wanderers, has emerged as Manchester United’s primary target for the coveted number 10 role. Cunha had an impressive season with Wolves, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists in the Premier League. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Cunha has agreed to a five-year deal with Manchester United, which includes an option to extend for an additional year. Wolves have accepted the payment for his £62.5 million release clause in instalments from United.
Cunha is expected to inherit the number 10 jersey, which has been worn by Marcus Rashford, a club academy product, since 2018. Rashford is set to depart from the club this summer, leaving the iconic number 10 shirt open. Cunha’s arrival, however, could have consequences for young winger Alejandro Garnacho. With Cunha and Bruno Fernandes likely to share the creative number 10 duties, Garnacho’s playing time may be severely limited. Fernandes, despite interest from Saudi Pro League teams, is expected to remain at Old Trafford.
Garnacho has already hinted at the possibility of leaving, especially after being left out of the squad for the recent match against Aston Villa. Manager Ruben Amorim has reportedly advised Garnacho to seek a new club, indicating he may not be part of United’s plans for the upcoming season. Manchester United appear ready to entertain offers for Garnacho, and since he is a product of their academy, his sale would result in a pure financial gain for the club. United recently placed a £65 million valuation on him amid interest from clubs such as Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Napoli, and Juventus.
