Manchester United are still on track to complete the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, despite their Europa League final disappointment against Tottenham Hotspur. Fabrizio Romano confirmed on the GIVEMESPORT Market Madness Podcast that the Brazilian’s move is not dependent on United’s qualification for the Champions League. The Red Devils suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spurs, ending their hopes of returning to Europe’s elite competition, but that result has not derailed their transfer plans.
Romano revealed that Manchester United have already informed Cunha they are ready to activate his £62.5 million release clause, which they intend to pay in installments. Discussions between the two parties are at an advanced stage, and the deal is expected to be completed soon. According to Romano, Cunha’s desire to join United is unaffected by the club’s European status—he is fully committed to the move and wants to play under new boss Ruben Amorim, regardless of the club missing out on Champions League football.
While Cunha is set to become Amorim’s first signing of the summer, Manchester United are also looking to add another striker to bolster their attacking options. However, they are unlikely to land Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres, who is only interested in joining a club competing in the Champions League. This leaves United searching for alternatives, and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, currently on loan from Manchester City, has emerged as a potential target. Delap is seen as a promising and more affordable option, but United may face competition from Chelsea and Newcastle, who can both offer European football next season.
Despite the setback in the Europa League final, Manchester United remain active in the transfer market. Cunha’s impending arrival adds a dynamic and technically gifted attacker to the squad, capable of playing across the front line. His addition could provide tactical flexibility for Amorim’s system and help United rebuild their attack amid uncertainty surrounding the futures of other forwards like Hojlund, Martial, and Zirkzee.
