Paul Scholes delivered a sharp critique of Manchester United following their humiliating 3-0 defeat to Tottenham, raising serious questions about the team’s coaching, recruitment, and overall performance under Erik ten Hag. The loss, which took place at Old Trafford, marked another disappointing chapter in the Red Devils’ shaky start to the 2024/25 season. Brennan Johnson’s goal in the third minute set the tone for Spurs, and the situation worsened for United when Bruno Fernandes received a straight red card in the 42nd minute for a reckless challenge on James Maddison. The result left Manchester United languishing in 12th place in the Premier League, intensifying the pressure on Ten Hag to turn things around ahead of a critical clash with Aston Villa. Speaking on SuperSport, Scholes remarked that the team looked like an “uncoached” side, noting their lack of identity on the pitch. He contrasted United’s disorganization with the clear and structured approach Tottenham has adopted under Ange Postecoglou, adding that Spurs’ playing style has been evident since the start of the season.
Scholes lamented United’s lack of energy and coherence, describing the players as flat and uncertain, with no visible enthusiasm or direction. He argued that such issues stem from poor preparation during training sessions and criticized the chaotic positioning of players during games. The former United midfielder also took aim at the club’s recruitment strategy, questioning the summer signing of Matthijs de Ligt for £43 million. He suggested that the Dutch defender has not provided an upgrade over Harry Maguire, who has been largely sidelined this season.
In response to whether De Ligt represented a £50 million improvement over Maguire, Scholes was unequivocal in his assessment, stating, “No, definitely not.” He emphasized that new signings should significantly enhance the squad, something he believes United’s recent acquisitions have failed to achieve.
Scholes also called on the team’s senior players to stop making excuses and take greater accountability for their performances. He stressed the importance of returning to the training ground with a focus on developing a clear and consistent style of play. In a blunt message, he urged the team to “find something” and show evidence of progress before the pressure on Ten Hag becomes untenable.
