A pundit has expressed his “concern” over the possibility of Manchester United parting ways with Ruben Amorim.

Chris Sutton believes Ruben Amorim’s position as Manchester United manager is not under immediate threat but has urged the team to eliminate basic mistakes to support their coach. Amorim, who took over at Old Trafford on November 11th after moving from Sporting CP to replace Erik ten Hag, has endured a difficult start. In his first 10 matches, United has lost half, crashed out of the EFL Cup, and slipped to 14th in the Premier League standings.

Their latest setback, a 2-0 defeat to Wolves, has left the team closer to the relegation zone than the top four. While Sutton does not foresee Amorim being sacked soon, he has called on the squad to significantly improve their performances. He particularly pointed to costly errors by goalkeepers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir in recent matches against Wolves and Tottenham as areas of concern.

In his BBC Sport predictions column, Sutton remarked that while Amorim’s job appears safe for now, the team’s errors are unacceptable. He highlighted a glaring mistake by Onana, describing it as “under-12s stuff” and noting, “It’s something you might see in youth matches, but it’s shocking to witness it at this level. Yet, Manchester United has managed to do it twice in two weeks.”

Reflecting on his previous predictions, Sutton admitted he had been overly generous in assessing United’s chances. He acknowledged being influenced by criticism from fans on social media and confessed to underestimating their poor form. “I was far too kind when I predicted a draw at Wolves last week. The reality is, they’re playing terribly,” he said.

Sutton also noted that Amorim is yet to shape the team with his own signings, suggesting the manager cannot be solely blamed for the current situation. However, he was blunt in his assessment of United’s performance, stating, “At the moment, we have to call it as it is—they’re a really poor side.”
