Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has hinted at the possibility of activating a “buy-back clause” to re-sign one of the club’s former players, potentially as early as January or during the next summer transfer window.
In the 2024 summer transfer period, United sold several players to raise funds for new additions. Among those who departed were Scott McTominay, Mason Greenwood, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and left-back Alvaro Carreras, who moved for approximately £5 million. Carreras, previously part of Real Madrid’s youth system, joined United in 2020 but never made a senior appearance, instead going out on loan to Preston, Granada, and Benfica.
Now permanently with Benfica, the 21-year-old has been in impressive form, particularly in the Champions League, where he delivered standout performances against Red Star Belgrade and Atletico Madrid. With injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, United have been left short-handed at left-back. While summer signing Noussair Mazraoui has filled in admirably, his fitness issues have forced improvisation, including using Jonny Evans as a makeshift left-back against Brentford.
Speculation is growing about Carreras returning to Old Trafford, especially with interest also coming from Liverpool, Barcelona, and Real Madrid. Ten Hag remains confident about United’s position, citing a £16 million buy-back clause that gives the club the upper hand. He emphasized that the club has carefully managed the player’s development.
Ten Hag praised Carreras’ journey, highlighting his gradual progression from Preston to La Liga and now to Benfica, where he has continued to refine his skills in a more competitive environment. The manager noted that such a trajectory has been crucial for the player’s growth but stressed that playing for Manchester United in the Premier League demands a unique level of experience and maturity. While the club evaluates its options, Carreras’ potential return remains firmly on the table.
