Former United forward Louis Saha believes that Pogba’s return could be transformative under new manager Ruben Amorim but cautions against bringing back other former stars.
Pogba, who will be eligible to return to football in March following an 18-month doping ban, has been praised by Saha for his unique talent and potential to make a significant impact in United’s midfield. Saha emphasized that while Pogba’s physical sharpness may take time to recover, his inherent talent is unquestionable, and his desire to prove himself could fuel his success. He believes that Pogba belongs at a top club like Manchester United and could add a new dimension to their midfield.
Ruben Amorim, who recently took over as manager, faces a significant task in rebuilding a squad that has failed to meet expectations, despite a massive £616 million investment during Erik ten Hag’s tenure. Amorim’s tactical approach, which revolves around a 3-4-2-1 formation, requires quality players in key positions, and Saha suggests that Pogba’s return could be beneficial. However, he also highlighted that United’s most pressing need is a clinical striker.
Saha noted that United’s ongoing struggles to find a prolific forward continue to hinder their performances. While Marcus Rashford has shown glimpses of quality, Saha pointed out that Rashford lacks the killer instinct needed to thrive as a No.9. He suggested that a proven goal-scorer, someone who can create chances independently and score when the team is under pressure, would be essential. Saha identified Viktor Gyökeres as a potential solution, praising his clinical ability but acknowledging that his price tag might be a challenge.
As Amorim looks to restore United to their former glory, tough decisions will need to be made. While Pogba’s return could bring a spark to the midfield, the acquisition of a reliable striker like Gyökeres could address the team’s major attacking deficiencies.
In addition to Pogba, there are reports that United are considering bringing back Angel Gomes, who left the club for Lille five years ago. Gomes, now 24 and a regular for England, will be a free agent next summer and could negotiate a pre-contract agreement in January. Amorim reportedly supports the move, but Saha expressed doubts about Gomes’ ability to solve United’s midfield issues, suggesting that a more experienced and influential player is needed.
Meanwhile, United continues its search for midfield reinforcements, with Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku frequently linked to the club. However, Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca has downplayed rumors of a January move for the Frenchman. On the striker front, Gyökeres remains a priority for United, although some, like former defender Rio Ferdinand, have raised concerns about his ability to perform in the Premier League.
Gomes’ career since leaving United has been promising. After brief appearances at Old Trafford, he moved to Lille, where he has developed into a versatile and reliable player. A successful loan at Boavista helped him secure a starting spot at Lille, where he has made 118 appearances, scored eight goals, and provided 18 assists. His ability to play in various midfield roles has made him an attractive option for top clubs.
As January approaches, Amorim will face critical decisions about the squad. Whether United opts to re-sign Gomes, pursue a striker like Gyökeres, or explore other alternatives will play a pivotal role in the manager’s quest to restore the club to its former glory.
