Ruthless from Amorim after scoring two in midweek…

Ruben Amorim has shed light on why Joshua Zirkzee was chosen to start over Rasmus Hojlund in Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Everton.

The 39-year-old manager is set to oversee his first Premier League game at Old Trafford this afternoon as the Red Devils host Sean Dyche’s side. Following a 3-2 victory against Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday, Amorim aims to carry that momentum into today’s match.

Fans were eager to see the starting XI and were surprised to find Zirkzee in the lineup instead of Hojlund, who had scored twice in midweek. Speaking to the media, Amorim clarified that the decision was due to “squad rotation.”

“It’s impossible to field the same players for every game,” Amorim stated. “We’re adapting our style and need everyone to contribute during matches and training sessions. Recovery in three days is tough, especially after a demanding game like the one against Bodø/Glimt, where we pressed a lot. Some players were fatigued, so we opted for fresh legs and different characteristics to make it harder for opponents to anticipate our strategy.

“We’ve got talented options, including returns like Kobbie Mainoo, one of the brightest young talents in the league. Our squad is full of international-level players, so I trust them to deliver a win today.”

While fans took to social media to share their thoughts, many were surprised Hojlund was benched after his stellar performance. Some rallied behind Zirkzee, calling this a pivotal moment for the summer signing.

One fan tweeted, “People need to give Zirkzee a chance. He’s part of a struggling United team, and players deserve patience just like managers do.”

Another added, “Zirkzee, this is your moment—make it count.”

A third remarked, “Rotation is fine, but winning is non-negotiable. Zirkzee has to step up.”

Zirkzee has faced challenges since his summer move from Bologna. Despite scoring the match-winner on his debut against Fulham, the Dutchman has yet to find the net again and has already been linked with a potential exit from the club.
