Dutch football legend Marco van Basten has harshly criticized Manchester United’s decision to sign a player he deems “idiotic” in a recent critique of Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United’s summer signing Manuel Ugarte is already drawing criticism as Erik ten Hag’s transfer strategy faces growing scrutiny. The Uruguayan midfielder, acquired from Paris Saint-Germain for €50 million (£42.3m) to bolster United’s midfield, struggled to make an impression during their recent loss to Tottenham at Old Trafford.
Dutch football legend Marco van Basten did not mince words when assessing Ugarte and Ten Hag’s transfer policy. Speaking on Ziggo Sport, Van Basten labeled United’s spending under Ten Hag as “idiotic,” questioning the rationale behind such investments. He highlighted Ugarte specifically, saying, “I saw Ugarte, a €50 million signing, wandering around at Manchester United. How does a player like this end up there? It’s absurd how much Ten Hag has spent on players who fail to deliver.”
Ugarte arrived at Old Trafford with high expectations, having showcased strong defensive capabilities during his brief time at PSG. He was even on Chelsea’s radar before United secured his signature. However, his inability to prevent Tottenham from dominating the midfield exposed deeper issues within United’s tactical setup and cohesion.
Former Premier League midfielder Robbie Earle offered a more measured perspective, suggesting Ugarte’s struggles stem from the disorganized state of the team. In an NBC interview, Earle remarked, “I feel for Ugarte. He came in as a promising midfielder, likely envisioned to partner Kobbie Mainoo, but he’s found himself in a team lacking identity or direction. It’s hard to discern what the team is aiming for.”
Van Basten went further, criticizing the overall quality of United’s squad and questioning the presence of genuine leaders. “Can you name a single world-class player at Manchester United? Rashford is off form. Bruno Fernandes is decent, and Onana is a reliable goalkeeper, but that’s it. Casemiro’s prime is behind him, and while Garnacho is promising, there’s no standout leader in this team,” he stated.
The pressure on Ugarte and Ten Hag is intensifying as United struggle at the start of the season, managing only seven points from their first six matches. Van Basten’s scathing comments mirror broader concerns about the club’s direction under Ten Hag, whose recruitment choices are under increasing scrutiny.
While voices like Earle point to systemic issues as the root cause, Van Basten’s harsh critique amplifies the growing pressure on the Dutch manager. Without significant improvement, questions about Ten Hag’s vision and United’s overall transfer strategy are likely to persist.
