Rúben Amorim reportedly rated Manchester United’s performance in his debut match as manager a five out of 10. The former Sporting CP coach’s first Premier League outing ended in a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town. Marcus Rashford’s early strike gave United the lead, but Omari Hutchinson equalized to share the spoils.

Amorim introduced his preferred 3-4-3 formation, but the team struggled to execute it effectively after limited training sessions under the new manager. Despite a promising start, the Red Devils needed goalkeeper André Onana to make several crucial saves to avoid defeat. The result left United in 12th place, underlining the uphill battle Amorim faces in rejuvenating the squad.

According to The Sun, Amorim acknowledged the team’s shortcomings in his post-match assessment, emphasizing the need for improvement. While praising Ipswich for their intensity, he noted that United’s performance revealed gaps in ball retention and positional discipline. Speaking to the players, Amorim reportedly said, “Some of you I’ve only worked with for two days, others for two weeks. We need to adapt quickly.” A source from the dressing room described his approach as realistic, recognizing the limited time he’d had to implement his methods.

In a tactical shake-up, Amorim positioned Amad Diallo as a right wing-back, deployed Rashford centrally, and included Noussair Mazraoui in a back three with Jonny Evans, who later made way for Luke Shaw. While commending the players’ efforts to adapt, he observed that they were overly focused on following instructions, which hindered their fluidity during the game.

Reflecting on the match, Amorim remarked, “The players tried to execute the plan, which is the most important takeaway. Of course, we have plenty to improve, but their commitment was there. They were overthinking, trying to remember everything from just two training sessions. Still, the effort was encouraging.” He added, “We could have won, but Onana’s saves kept us in it. The Premier League is never easy, but we’ll get better.”

Amorim’s next test will be in the Europa League as United host Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt at Old Trafford on Thursday, offering an opportunity to further implement his vision.
