Last week, Ruben Amorim, the former manager of Sporting Clube de Portugal, officially stepped into his role as Manchester United’s new head coach, succeeding Erik ten Hag. The 39-year-old was appointed following a disappointing start to the 2024/25 season, which resulted in the Dutchman’s dismissal.
As Amorim prepares for his managerial debut this weekend, he has been working with players who were not called up for international duty during the recent break. With the January transfer window approaching, speculation has emerged regarding discontent within the squad.
According to reports from La Stampa, via Calcio Mercato, Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee, who joined United from Serie A side Bologna this summer, is reportedly dissatisfied with his situation at the club. The 23-year-old has allegedly instructed his representatives to explore opportunities for a potential move elsewhere.
The report further suggests that Juventus, led by manager Thiago Motta, could be a possible destination for Zirkzee, with Motta reportedly an admirer of the player. A loan deal appears to be the most likely scenario, as Zirkzee is said to be open to a temporary exit.
Zirkzee’s frustration may stem from his struggles to replicate his debut success, where he scored against Fulham in the Premier League. Since then, he has managed just one goal and two assists across 17 appearances in all competitions this season.
In his first interview as United boss, Amorim outlined his vision for the team, particularly for his first match in charge against Ipswich Town on Sunday.
“I believe you’ll see a clear idea on the pitch,” Amorim said. “Whether you like it or not, there will be a recognizable approach, a positioning, something that reflects the level we want to achieve. You’ll feel it.”
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Amorim added, “We’ve only had two training sessions before this first game, and this is the best league in the world. But one thing I can promise is that you will see an idea. That much, I can guarantee.”
