However, rumors from Catalan outlet Mundo Deportivo suggest that De Gea could be on the verge of joining Barcelona. The Spanish giants, grappling with financial constraints, have been cautious in their transfer dealings, spending a mere €3.4m on transfer fees last summer and dedicating their entire €40m winter budget to the acquisition of Brazilian forward Vitor Roque. Hence, acquiring De Gea on a free transfer is viewed as a sensible move to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks.

While Marc-Andre ter Stegen currently holds the starting position, recent rumors linking him to the Saudi Pro League have cast doubt on his future. Inaki Pena has shown promise during his appearances this season, potentially attracting interest from other clubs.

Should De Gea join Barcelona, he is likely to assume a backup role behind Ter Stegen, as the club is reluctant to part ways with the German shot-stopper.
