Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres is set to join Manchester United this January after Ruben Amorim was appointment as the new manager of the club
After his hat-trick helped Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP inflict Manchester City’s heaviest defeat since 2020 on Tuesday, Viktor Gyokeres is the buzz of the town.
From Amorim, in command when the Blues went wild on their previous Champions League visit to Lisbon – a 5-0 mauling in their previous 16 first leg game in 2022 – the 4-0 victory marked a complete circle. Gyokeres began Coventry City’s 2-0 away loss against Cardiff City that same evening.
Having notched 43 goals in 116 games for Coventry, he drew interest from Amorim and signed a contract valued around Ā£20m in 2023. “I only got Gyokeres to Sporting because of Ruben Amorim,” his agent subsequently said.
Call for the obvious connections with Manchester United, which his triple against City has now only accentuated.
The Sweden international has maintained he is not arranging a reunion with Amorim in Manchester with the coach also already pointing out his Ā£83.9million release clause as a possible sticking point.
“I will not take any of Sporting’s players in January,” Amorim told reporters last week. Gyokeres comes with ā¬100 million price tag. It is rather intricate.
For United and Dan Ashworth, who was technical director of Brighton & Hove Albion when they transferred Gyokeres to Coventry for Ā£1 million in 2021, it is definitely problematic. Two years later, the Championship team turned a Ā£19 million profit on him and are poised for another inflow.
In his Sporting agreement, Coventry incorporated a 15 percent sell-on provision that lowers to 10 percent should he meet specific performance targets. Given the percentage they will lose to Coventry, Sporting will attempt and hold out for more than they may have otherwise done.
