Man Utd ‘open talks’ with shock second manager to replace Erik ten Hag despite Ruben Amorim ‘agreement’
Manchester United is reportedly engaging in conversations with Marco Silva to possibly take over from Erik ten Hag, even as they continue efforts to secure Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP.
The club’s recent loss to West Ham at the London Stadium proved to be a pivotal moment, resulting in Ten Hag’s departure, which was confirmed the following day.
The club’s statement announced, “Erik ten Hag has left his position as Manchester United’s first-team manager. Appointed in April 2022, he led the club to two domestic trophies, including the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We thank him for his efforts and wish him success moving forward. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take on the role of interim head coach, with the support of the current coaching staff, while the search for a permanent replacement is underway.”
Shortly after, journalist David Ornstein revealed that United has begun discussions with Sporting CP regarding Amorim’s €10 million release clause. Though the 39-year-old manager is reportedly interested in joining, recent updates suggest that another contender may now be in the spotlight.
According to Guillem Balague, United has approached Marco Silva about the possibility of managing at Old Trafford, as there are concerns Amorim might hold off for Manchester City should Pep Guardiola leave. Balague shared on X: “Word from Portugal suggests Ruben Amorim may consider waiting for Manchester City if Pep departs. Still, United is actively pursuing him, and Marco Silva has been contacted as well.”
Silva, who has revived his career in the Premier League with Fulham after his exit from Everton in 2019, has helped the team secure 10th and 13th-place finishes in the last two seasons, steering them clear of relegation. Balague emphasized that while Silva is among United’s options, many in Portugal see Amorim as the leading candidate for the role.
