Viktor Gyokeres has decided to join Manchester United and reveals two reasons for his decision.
Manchester United kicked off the season under Erik ten Hag, but after a series of disappointing results, the club decided to part ways with him. In his place, Ruben Amorim took charge, though his early days at Old Trafford were far from ideal. However, things improved significantly before the international break, with United losing just once in their last seven matches across all competitions. That lone defeat came against Fulham in the FA Cup, decided by penalties.
Ten Hag traditionally employed a back-four setup, which suited the squad, but Amorim has implemented a back-three system with wing-backs. To adapt to this approach, the club reinforced the left wing-back role by signing Patrick Dorgu from Lecce during the January transfer window. Now, reports from TBR Football suggest that United are looking to strengthen the right wing-back position as well, with Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda initially topping their list. However, after Quenda’s move to Chelsea, the Red Devils have turned their attention to Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.
United face stiff competition for Frimpong’s signature, as both Manchester City and Liverpool are also monitoring his situation. Liverpool, in particular, view him as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is rumored to be on the verge of joining Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer. Amorim’s team has already opened discussions with Frimpong’s representatives in an attempt to outmaneuver their rivals in securing the Dutchman’s services.
According to German outlet Sport Bild, via Paisley Gates, Leverkusen would be willing to part ways with Frimpong for a fixed fee of £33.7 million (€40 million). The dynamic full-back has thrived in a right wing-back role at BayArena, making him a natural fit for Amorim’s tactical setup. Additionally, his versatility allows him to operate as a traditional right winger. Having won the Bundesliga title, DFB Pokal, and German Super Cup last season, Frimpong has carried his fine form into the current campaign, racking up 13 goal contributions in all competitions.
