Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness believes Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, made a crucial error in his handling of the club’s management. According to Wyness, Ratcliffe’s decision to allow manager Erik ten Hag to expand his backroom staff may cause problems for Manchester United in the future.
Last summer, after uncertainty about Ten Hag’s future, the club chose to back him and allowed him to strengthen his coaching team. As part of this, Ten Hag brought in ex-United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and Dutch coach Rene Hake to assist him.
However, Manchester United’s sluggish start to the current season has raised questions about Ten Hag’s choices, including his recruitment and team selections.
Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, pointed out:
“Ten Hag has built a sizable Dutch contingent. This, I believe, is where Ratcliffe miscalculated. Even after doubts about Ten Hag’s future last season, Ratcliffe allowed him to increase his coaching staff, which could create issues for the club.”
Wyness added that this situation poses a challenge for the club, especially if they need to make managerial changes mid-season.
Despite their recent win over Brentford, Manchester United still sits 11th in the league, far from their top-four competitors. Ten Hag is under pressure to maintain his position, despite significant financial backing during the summer transfer window.
While the club stood by Ten Hag following last season’s FA Cup success, his inability to carry that momentum forward has cast doubt on his long-term future at Old Trafford. With the club rumored to be considering several high-profile managers as potential successors, the coming weeks will likely determine whether Ten Hag remains in charge or faces an early exit.
