Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly wants to replace Onana with Bundesliga’s finest goalkeeper after poor performance against Brentford. The new signing will cost Manchester United £45m.

Manchester United is reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Lazio’s goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, according to sources from Footballwave. The 29-year-old has emerged as one of Serie A’s standout shot-stoppers, with his performances earning him a regular spot in Italy’s national team.

Provedel’s impressive rise this season has been fueled not only by his goalkeeping skills but also by an extraordinary feat for someone in his position—scoring a goal in a major competition. His defining moment came during the Champions League group stage when he netted a last-minute equalizer against Atletico Madrid.

His 96th-minute header salvaged a 1-1 draw for Lazio, ensuring the team progressed to the tournament’s round of 16. Provedel’s goal made him just the third goalkeeper in Champions League history to score from open play.

This wasn’t the first time Provedel made headlines for his goal-scoring ability. In 2020, while on loan at Juve Stabia, he scored another late equalizer, this time against Ascoli. His knack for scoring can be traced back to his early playing days, where he initially started his football career as a striker. During the 2008/09 season with Pordenone’s youth team, he scored 27 goals before transitioning to a goalkeeper.

Manchester United’s interest in Provedel hints at a possible overhaul of their goalkeeping department. Despite having Andre Onana, who is known for his ball-playing abilities, Provedel’s rare skill set, which includes scoring goals, could offer the club an additional edge.

However, Lazio’s reported asking price of around €35 million could pose a challenge for United, particularly with the January transfer window approaching. The club might opt to revisit the move during the summer.

On the other hand, Andre Onana, who arrived at Manchester United from Inter Milan for €51 million (plus €4 million in bonuses), has not lived up to expectations. Despite excelling with Inter, where he led the Champions League in clean sheets and was praised for his distribution, Onana has struggled at Old Trafford, with notable errors in high-profile games against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, leaving fans increasingly frustrated.

This season has been tough for Manchester United, as they have fallen behind in the Premier League and been knocked out of both European competitions and the League Cup. The pursuit of Provedel could signal the club’s determination to address their weaknesses and strengthen key areas when the transfer window reopens, aiming to regain their competitive standing.
