Thomas Tuchel has been officially appointed as the England manager and is being touted as having the opportunity to achieve “immortality” in football.
Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel has officially taken the helm as England’s new manager, succeeding Gareth Southgate, who stepped down after Euro 2024.
Tuchel now becomes only the third foreign manager to lead the England team, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
The Football Association confirmed his appointment via social media, sharing a teaser post featuring a Three Lions baseball cap—likely referencing Tuchel’s signature sideline hat. Some fans initially speculated that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp might have been the one chosen due to the cap’s style.
Tuchel arrives with an impressive coaching background, having guided Chelsea to a surprise Champions League triumph in 2021 and led Paris Saint-Germain to the final the previous year. The 51-year-old also claimed league titles with Bayern Munich and PSG, including managing England’s current captain, Harry Kane, during his time in Germany.
While the decision to hire a non-English coach might stir debate, former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has no issues with the move. Ferdinand believes that Tuchel could become a legendary figure if he brings the success that has eluded England in recent years.
Speaking in a YouTube discussion, Ferdinand addressed the concerns over nationality, stating, “There’s been some talk about keeping the job for English managers, and names like Graham Potter have been thrown around. But what matters most is hiring the right person.”
He continued, “If Tuchel delivers a World Cup or Euros win, those same critics will be celebrating without caring about whether he’s German. His nationality won’t matter—it’s about making history. This is a huge chance for Tuchel and these players to achieve something legendary, and I think that excites him. It’s an opportunity to reach the status of Sir Alf Ramsey.”
