Ji-sung Park is often highlighted in discussions about the most overlooked players in Premier League history. However, during his time at Manchester United, the South Korean international was anything but undervalued by those at Old Trafford.

Park joined Manchester United in 2005 and spent seven fruitful years at the club, contributing greatly to several campaigns. Notably, he played over 40 matches in both the 2005–06 and 2008–09 seasons, showcasing his dependability and endurance. The only time he played fewer than 20 games in a season was his final year at the club.

Throughout his tenure, Park enjoyed a decorated career, winning four Premier League titles, three League Cups, the UEFA Champions League in 2008, and the FIFA Club World Cup. However, the FA Cup was the one domestic trophy that eluded him before he moved to Queens Park Rangers in 2012. With over 200 appearances for United, Park’s importance to the team was undeniable.

In a 2021 interview on the UTD Podcast, Park revealed why he decided to leave the club. He explained that during the 2011–12 season, after being excluded from the squad for five consecutive games while fully fit, he realized it was time to move on.

For the first time in his United career, Park was benched without any injury concerns, a clear indication to him that his role in the squad was diminishing. He had a conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson about his decision, and although the club expressed a desire for him to stay, Park felt it was the right time to leave. The frustration of being sidelined despite being in good form was difficult, and some of his teammates had begun to notice that his departure was imminent.

Leaving Manchester United after seven years was an emotional decision for Park. He had established deep connections there, with friends, family, and a sense of belonging. At 31, he knew this would likely be his final significant transfer and contract, so he made the tough call to leave.

One particularly touching memory Park shared was receiving a letter from Sir Alex Ferguson after his departure, which he treasures to this day. The letter, filled with appreciation and personal sentiment, meant a lot to Park, deepening his gratitude for the time spent under Ferguson’s leadership. According to the letter, even Ferguson’s grandson didn’t want him to leave, further solidifying the bond Park had with the club.

Reflecting on his time at United, Park expressed how fortunate he felt to have been part of such a successful team and to have worked with Ferguson. Although leaving was a challenging decision, it marked the close of an exceptional chapter in his football career, one that Manchester United fans continue to celebrate.
