The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has officially reduced Paul Pogba’s four-year suspension for doping.

The 31-year-old midfielder was handed the ban last year after testing positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a substance that boosts hormone production, including testosterone. Pogba, however, consistently denied knowingly or intentionally using any prohibited substances and quickly filed an appeal against the ruling.

CAS has now reviewed his appeal and lowered the suspension to 18 months. According to Sami Mokbel from the Daily Mail, Pogba will be able to return to training in January and could be cleared to play by March.

Despite the initial four-year ban, Pogba has remained on contract with Juventus and will be eligible for selection under manager Thiago Motta later in the season. His last appearance for the club came in September 2023, when he played as a substitute during Juventus’ 2-0 win against Empoli.

Pogba’s positive test followed a random doping check after a match against Udinese, where he was an unused substitute. Both his A and B samples tested positive for DHEA, with confirmation of the B sample in October. In December, anti-doping officials originally sought a four-year suspension.

In response to the ban, Pogba voiced his disappointment, saying, “I believe the ruling is unjust. I’m heartbroken that everything I’ve worked for in my career has been taken from me. Once I’m cleared, the truth will come out. I have never knowingly or deliberately used any banned substances. As a professional, I would never disrespect or cheat my fellow athletes or fans.”
