A former Manchester United player has shed light on his decision to part ways with the club, revealing that a single discussion with Erik ten Hag was enough to solidify his choice.
Ten Hag took charge of Manchester United in May 2022, succeeding interim manager Ralf Rangnick. Since his appointment, several prominent players have exited the club, including Cristiano Ronaldo, who made headlines with his controversial interview with Piers Morgan before departing.
James Garner, who left the club under Ten Hag’s management, has now shared that his decision to leave came after just one conversation with the Dutchman. Garner transferred to Everton in September 2022 for a reported fee of £15 million, including add-ons.
In an interview with BBC Sport in 2023, the midfielder described Ten Hag as “approachable but strict,” noting that the manager maintains high standards and holds players accountable for their actions. Garner explained, “I asked Ten Hag directly if I would have a role in the squad or if he saw me as part of his plans. His response wasn’t what I was hoping for, so I knew it was time to move on.”
He added, “I had just come off one of my best seasons and didn’t want to waste time sitting on the bench. In football, nothing is guaranteed, but when the club starts bringing in multiple midfielders, you realize where you stand. I needed to secure regular playing time when I returned.”
Garner made only seven appearances for Manchester United, spending much of his time on loan at Watford and Nottingham Forest, where he had more opportunities to play. Since joining Everton, the 23-year-old has appeared 63 times, scoring twice and contributing three assists from his defensive midfield position.
